Marine Forum South Africa 2018 just concluded in Pretoria, South Africa. It saw the attendance of over 100 delegates from the industry in South Africa, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The theme of this year’s forum was Star Wars. The organisers pulled every stop to make the event the success it was.
The presenters spoke on varied topics from Autonomous Ships to Blockchain in the marine insurance industry and General Average from an engineer’s perspective. We presented a paper on Inland Challenges in Africa. We looked at the impact on road accidents on the GDP of Kenya’s economy and the rate of truck hijacks in South Africa.
Border crossing delays and “institutionalised” corruption along checkpoints are also hampering the transport of cargo across Africa. We compared the statutes and case laws relating to carrier liability in South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia , Morocco, Tunisia and OHADA member states.
Lloyds of London presented a paper of Natural Catastrophes around the world and how to prepare for them.
Bowmans law firm spoke of blockchain and how it will impact the insurance industry.
Hendrike from IUMI provided updates on marine insurance facts and figures around the world. Unfortunately, insurance penetration in Africa has remained largely stagnant over the past five years.
